The Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on the Macroeconomic Index Derived from the Kaldor’s Magic Square- Applied in Egyptian Economy

Abstract

The study aims to indicate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the Egyptian macroeconomic performance, during the period from the first quarter of 2019 to the fourth quarter of 2020, by deriving the macroeconomic indicator from the Kaldor`s magic square, which includes the main objectives of any economic policy and they are (economic growth rate, unemployment rate, inflation rate, external balance rate), and the study concluded that COVID-19 has a negative impact on the Egyptian macroeconomic index, as with the beginning of the pandemic spreading inside Egypt, the index decreased from 0.345 in the first quarter of 2020 to 0.134 In the second quarter of 2020, driven by the negative effects of COVID-19 on macroeconomic indicators (economic growth rate, unemployment, inflation, external balance).
